How each system works
Evaporative cooling draws outside air through wet pads and distributes cooled air into the home. Refrigerated cooling transfers heat using a refrigerant circuit. Reverse-cycle refrigerated models can also provide heating.
Humidity and ventilation
Evaporative cooling works best in hot, dry conditions and needs an appropriate path for air to escape, usually through open windows or doors. Its cooling effect decreases as humidity rises. Refrigerated cooling generally operates with windows and doors closed and can remove moisture from indoor air.
Installation and ownership
Compare the installed price, water use, electricity use, maintenance requirements and whether you also need a separate heating system. Existing ducts are not automatically suitable for a different technology; ask the installer to assess the complete system.
Choose around your home
Discuss the rooms you use, roof access, noise, ventilation and comfort preferences. Ask each company to explain why its proposed solution suits those requirements rather than choosing on price alone.
